Beacon Racing are a relatively new race team formed in December 2008
As well as Beacon Racing being a fully functional race team we will also provide work experience for 12 students on a Fast track Motorsport Foundation degree at Staffordshire University for a period of 8 months between January and August.
During this time the students will learn and participate in all aspects of being part of a racing team. This will include preparation of the car prior to a race, support for the race car at the race meetings and also the important job of how to make a cup of tea.
We have entered the Mini Challenge 2009 with Roger Grimshaw driving in car no 97. Whilst this is our first year in this competition we have made sure we have the necessary logistics to get to and from the race meetings and the expertise to prepare and maintain the car whilst racing. Any new championship presents a rapid learning curve, however we love a challenge so watch out for car 97. (You cant miss it youll see lots of pink as it passes you)
We are also hoping to compete in historical Formula Ford racing in the North Western Club Formula Ford 1600 Championship with our Sparton Formula Ford which currently has drives available
Another project being undertaken by our students is a restoration of a Javelin Formula Ford. This car was driven by Nigel Mansell for a number of races in 1977 with reasonable success. The car spent a number of years at Mallory Park in the race school, and after a period languishing in a barn is now undergoing a rebuild by our students with the hope of it having an outing towards the end of the season (as long as we can find an engine and Hewland gearbox for it)
